The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are expecting that flu viruses and the Covid-19 virus will both be spreading this fall and winter.  Now is not the time to become complacent in taking care of yourself! 

The CDC recommends vaccinations and other ways to help yourself, and your family, stay well this flu season. Good overall health habits are particularly important this time of year.  Get plenty of rest and drink lots of fluids.  If you are not feeling well, stay at home so you do not expose other people.  Be careful to avoid close contact with anyone experiencing symptoms.  Wash your hands frequently and be sure you cover your mouth and nose if you cough or sneeze.  Try to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth as much as possible.

May is such a beautiful month.  One of my favorite months of the year.  New life is sprouting up everywhere.  Weather is warming and people are eager to enjoy the sunshine!  I searched the web for trivia about my favorite month and came up with some fun facts!  I hope you find them as interesting as I did! 

  • Levi Strauss & Jacob Davis received their patent for Blue Jeans on May 20th 1873!
  • Emerald is the birthstone for May.  Emerald represents love and success
  • Lily of the Valley is the birth flower for May
  • May was originally named for Maia, the Greek goddess of fertility
  • The Empire State Building opened on May 1, 1931
  • South Carolina became the 8th state on May 23, 1788, Rhode Island became the 13th state on May 29, 1790 - Minnesota was admitted to the union on May 11, 1858 –and Wisconsin became the 30th sate of May 29, 1848!

October Is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Breast cancer is very close to my heart as my mother passed away from this disease when I was very young. In today’s world, she most likely would have survived, due to the advances that have been made in the medical world. It is my sincere hope that by the time my granddaughters are adults, this disease will be eradicated, or at the very least, easy to detect and cure.

According to Wikipedia, Breast Cancer Awareness Month (BCAM), also referred to in America as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM), is an annual international health campaign organized by major breast cancer charities every October to increase awareness of the disease and to raise funds for research into its cause, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and cure. The campaign also offers information and support to those affected by breast cancer.

This yearly campaign works to educate people about the importance of early screening, testing, check-ups and more. The campaign starts on October 1st and ends on October 31st every year.

We urge all of our friends, family and customers to be diligent in their exams, both self-exams and doctor exams, and proactive in taking charge of your own health. This “awareness month” should serve as a reminder to all of us (men and women) to make our doctor’s appointments and take care of ourselves and our health.

While there are many things celebrated in the month of September, what could be better than taking a little time out for Self-Care!

In our busy day to day lives, one of the things we often fail to do is take time out to care for our own needs. We are busy caring for others all of the time and tend to neglect ourselves. We need to remember that if we empty our own vessel, we have nothing left to fill the vessels of others. True self-care isn’t being selfish or self-centered – it is essential if we are to stay strong and helpful to others. Paying attention to how YOU feel, speaking up for yourself and saying yes or no without feeling guilty is paramount to a happy and healthy life.

While this is something we should strive to do every day, let’s start out by practicing in the month of September. Each day do something nice for yourself. That could mean taking a 15 minute walk in solitude, getting a massage, speaking out when you would have normally bottled up your feelings, even something as simple as taking a few minutes to simply breathe deeply and take in the beauty around you. When you are kind to yourself, you will find that it makes you want to be kinder to others as well!

In an article I recently read in “Arthritis and Osteoporosis” (see article here: https://www.arthritiswa.org.au/content/page/winter-amp-arthritis.html) I found it interesting that Professor Jamison of Harvard Medical School and Chief Psychologist at the Pain Management Center advises “…The factor that may be responsible for increased pain is not snow, cold or rain, but actually, a change in barometric pressure”. Barometric pressure (atmospheric pressure) is the force exerted onto a surface by the weight of the atmosphere at any given point. As a storm system develops, the barometric pressure begins to drop.

Jamison explains the impact of barometric pressure on the body through a test conducted with a balloon. “When a balloon is inflated, it has the maximum inside and outside pressure. High barometric pressure that pushes against the body from the outside keeps tissues from expanding.” As the barometric pressure falls, tissues in the body may expand. As the tissues expand, they put more pressure on nerves that control pain signals.

“It doesn’t take much expansion or contraction of tissue to affect a pain trigger,” Jamison said. Therefore even individuals who live in drier climates also reported feeling more pain with weather changes.”
